Sambhar dal recipe

Enjoy a quick and easy sambhar recipe that's both flavourful and delicious ,using only the spices available in your kitchen . This sambhar pairs wonderfully with your choice of fresh vegetables , steamed rice and if you like , a perfectly fried fish on the side.




For the Sambar


Ingredients

250 gms tuvar dal

Wash and soak the tuvar dal

4 cloves of garlic mashed

1 green tomato sliced

1 tbsp coriander powder

1 tbsp chilli powder

1 tsp pepper powder

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp Asafoetida powder/ hing

Salt to taste

1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves

Small ball of tamarind. Soaked in 1 cup of hot water for at least half an hour. Remove the pulp and keep aside.

Method

Add oil in a pressure cooker, sauté the mashed garlic cloves. Once lightly brown add the sliced green tomatoes ,sauté lightly. Add the coriander powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder, chilli powder and asafoetida powder along with 1 cup water.

Allow this to cook for a minute. Add the dal , salt to taste and enough water. Pressure cook on a high for 1 whistle and low for 1 whistle.

Once the steam is released add the tamarind pulp and finely chopped coriander leaves.


For the tadka

3 kashmiri chillies

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

Few curry leaves

Oil

Method

Heat up all of this well, once it starts to splutter add this to the dal and mix well.
