Vatana Curry/ Dried Peas Curry

Simple vatana Curry prepared with East Indian Bottle masala and other spices.

Ingredients 250 gms white vatana {dehydrated white peas} Soaked for 6 hrs . Add just enough water and salt to the vatana and pressure cook on high for 1 whistle and then low for 2 whistle.

Ingredients for the ground masala 3 green chillies 1 tsp desiccated coconut or fresh coconut 1/4 tsp poppy seeds 1/4 tsp sesame seeds 1/2 tsp garam masala powder 1 onion chopped Dry roast the coconut, then grind all the above mentioned ingredients for the ground masala to a smooth paste adding just enough water.

Ingredients 2 onions finely chopped 3 tomatoes finely chopped 8 cloves of garlic finely chopped 1 inch ginger finely chopped 1 and 1/2 tsp East Indian Bottle masala 1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves

Method Once oil is hot enough add the finely chopped garlic and ginger ,saute well. add the chopped onions and saute till lightly brown. Then add the chopped tomatoes, saute till soft. Adding some of the cooked vatana water and a little bit of salt , helps the tomatoes to soften . Once the to tomatoes are cooked and turn soft add the ground masala and stir fry for a minute on medium flame. Then add the East Indian Bottle masala and mix well. Add in the cooked vatana and 1 cup water. Allow to cook for 5 mins. Lastly add salt if required, and finely chopped coriander leaves. Cook for another 10 mins on medium flame.
